CEBU CITY – Department of Tourism (DOT) secretary, Cristina Garcia-Frasco highlighted the record-breaking tourism employment in the Philippines, with over 16 million Filipinos now employed in the industry.
Frasco shared this good news at the grand opening of NuSTAR Hotel Cebu, May 8 at the hotel’s grand lobby with special guests and attendees including officials from various tourism-related organizations and stakeholders.
Frasco bared that the Philippines being recognized as the world’s leading diamond destination for the sixth year in a row and Asia’s leading beach destination, while Cebu is honored as Asia’s leading wedding destination, praised for its island beauty and airport warmth. These milestones are part of the National Tourism Development Plan (NTDP) approved for 2023 to 2028.
“The plan focuses on sustainability, innovation, and inclusivity, aiming to improve connectivity, convenience, and equality across tourism destinations. Infrastructure upgrades include airport expansions, PVPS, tourism roads, and tourist rest areas to ensure accessibility. Cebu, home to Asia’s Best Airport, is highlighted as a crucial player in attracting global travelers and investors,” she said.
Frasco cited bold policies introduced to attract global travelers and investors, such as the Create More Act and the VAT refund program for foreign travelers; the introduction of the digital nomad visa as a significant policy to boost tourism and the Michelin Guide that is brought to the Philippines, including Cebu, as part of the administration’s agenda. This is to empower local government units as tourism engines through funding and capacity building.
Cebu’s tourism performance and cultural significance
The DOT secretary noted that Cebu generated over P87B in visitor receipts in 2024, a 111% increase from the previous year, with its tourism offerings described as diverse, including living reefs, pristine beaches, vibrant diving sites, and baroque heritage.
“The City’s cultural and gastronomic experiences, such as the taste of lechon and Carcar’s chicharon are highlighted as unique attractions. Cebu’s portfolio of world-class accommodations is praised for offering comfort and character rooted in local culture and hospitality,” Frasco shared.
She congratulated NuSTAR Hotel Cebu for being an iconic addition to Cebu’s tourism landscape, describing it as strengthening Cebu’s position as one of the world’s most exceptional tourism destinations. Frasco also reflected on the Cebuano values of devotion to excellence, service, and deep faith in Santo Nino, which have been instrumental in overcoming challenges.
The unity and hard work of Cebuanos are credited for the City’s leadership in the nation’s recovery and growth, she expressed optimism about the future of Philippine tourism, driven by the love and determination of the people.
“The milestone of the NuSTAR Hotel Cebu is celebrated as a powerful chapter in Cebu’s story. The hotel’s legacy is expected to reflect the values and achievements of the Cebuano people, envisioning a future defined by excellence, unity, and progress that lifts every Filipino community,” Frasco concluded.
