In celebration of the Chinese Arts and Culture Festival, Shangri-La Mactan, Cebu hosted a vibrant Dragon Boat Regatta at its beachfront, honoring the rich traditions of Asia through sport, storytelling, and community engagement.
The event brought together guests, paddlers, and local partners for an unforgettable afternoon of cultural immersion. Set against the backdrop of Shangri-La’s pristine beachfront, the regatta showcased thrilling dragon boat races that embodied teamwork, heritage, and the enduring spirit of the sport.
Before taking to the water, participants attended a special classroom session facilitated by the Professional Association of Dragonboat Sports (PADS). This educational segment provided a deeper understanding of the history of dragon boat racing, essential commands, and safety protocols — ensuring both a safe and culturally respectful experience for all.
Six teams competed in a high-energy 200-meter mixed-category race, creating a festive atmosphere for resort guests and visitors. More than a sporting event, the regatta served as a platform to foster camaraderie, cultural appreciation, and shared adventure.
“We are proud to spotlight such a meaningful tradition through our Dragon Boat Festival,” said Gladys Loret, Shangri-La Mactan, Cebu Director of Marketing Communications. “It reflects our commitment to celebrating the diverse cultures of Asia and creating memorable experiences for our guests.” Loret added.
The Dragon Boat Festival is part of Shangri-La’s broader initiative to promote cultural awareness and appreciation, especially of Chinese arts and heritage. As part of this effort, the resort also offers a complimentary cultural activity every Saturday from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM, exclusively for in-house guests — a unique opportunity to explore and engage with Asian traditions.
Guests are invited to book their stay and be part of these enriching cultural festivities.
