In the recent announcement of Sara Duterte’s potential presidential run in 2028 many Filipinos have their minds now occupied by the national elections which are still years away.

In light of this statement by the current vice-president, Cebu’s Governor Pam Baricuatro delivered a comment that delighted and resonated with the many Cebuanos under her care “…this is not the time for politics” she states. A message that stayed true to the platform that made the Cebuanos choose her as their governor; governance emphasizing public service as a priority not politics. Since assuming office on June 30, 2025; the current administration had concentrated their efforts on strengthening basic services, addressing long-standing provincial concerns, and improving responsiveness to communities. This results driven approach is what Cebuanos deeply desire to be sustained and maintained.

Cebuanos from all walks of life have echoed their Governor Pam’s sentiment – “Sakto ra gyud ang giingon sa Gobernador. Panahon kini sa trabaho, dili sa pamulitika,” said one barangay leader. “We want leaders who are visible on the ground, solving problems now, not talking about the next election.” A PUJ driver also stated ‘Let the future take care of itself.’ “Ang importante karon, naa’y aksyon,” – ‘We appreciate that the Governor is choosing to serve instead of getting distracted.’

Many Cebuanos emphasized their need for leaders who incentivize economic growth & recovery, development of infrastructure, better & more accessible health services, stronger disaster resilience & response, and greater livelihood opportunities rather than early politicking which disregards the needs of the people.

Cebuano business groups further give support to the Governor Pam’s position noting that economic growth, investor confidence, tourism, and job creation relies on government that stays on track – that leaders must sustain governance with a focus on the delivery of their services for the public and their people rather than political positioning.

The sentiments are clear – Cebuanos see in Governor Pam a leader that reflects their ideals in leadership; a style that favours grounded practical action, unity, and accountability – values that highlight the Cebuano’s strong beliefs in self-reliance and resilience.

For the people of Cebu, governance is not about the next election cycle – it is about delivering solutions today.
