Volunteers from Carbon T.I.N.U.O.D., an alliance of karumateros and kargadors at the Carbon Public Market, and Tau Gamma Phi took part in the Grand Carbon Cleanup yesterday in partnership with Cebu2World Development, Inc. (C2W).
The Grand Carbon Cleanup is one component of a comprehensive set of programs by C2W to help the community as part of its efforts to modernize the Carbon Public Market district.
The cleanup kicked off at the recently established Carbon Bagsakan on Quezon Boulevard and covered F. Calderon St., M.C. Briones St., Escaño St., and parts of Magallanes St. Around 600 sacks of garbage was collected.
“Ang paghapsay ug paglimpyo (sa Carbon) maoy nakanindot ani. Dili ra ingon nga ang mga kargador, vendors, ug ang ubang organisasyon diri nangwarta ra. Apil gyud ang pagpanlimpyo ug pagpakabana sa palibot kay naa man nanginabuhi diri,” Aldrin Cabigon of Carbon TINUOD said in an interview. (As vendors and laborers, we’re not just after making money. Cleaning up our surroundings is important because this is where we make our living.)
Cabigon added that it is part of their vision for a better Carbon Public Market.
“Mas nindot gyud nang motabang gyud ta sa tagsa-tagsa nato kay para man ni sa kaayuhan sa tanan. Part gihapon ni sa among pangandoy para sa Carbon, kay gikan man ang development sa Megawide. Puhon, ang mga anak [sa mga vendor, kargador, ug karumatero] ganahan pud mosuroy diri. At least makita nila nga lahi ra gyud diay sauna ug karon.” (It’s best to help each other on this, because it is for everyone. In the future, children of vendors, kargadors, and karumateros can enjoy the new Carbon that Megawide is working on. They will see how different it is from the past—from unruly to clean and orderly.)
Duke Cyril Lebumfacil, Grand Triskelion of Tau Gamma Phi’s University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJR) Chapter, said they are hoping for the success of the Carbon modernization project.
“Our chapter decided to join the Grand Carbon Cleanup because, for my part, since nag eskwela man ko sa USJR, nindot sd tan-awon nga limpyo ang lugar kon asa ko nag eskwela dapit,” Lebumfacil said in a separate interview. “I feel proud taking part in making this [Grand Carbon Cleanup] happen, since ma-world class man sya nga market. Sa panahon nga mahimo nang world-class ang Carbon, makaingon ko nga nakatabang mi ana.” (As a USJR student, I would want the area clean. I feel proud of making the cleanup happen. When Carbon becomes world class, I can say that we were able to help make it happen.)
Jonas Jude Ybañez, Tau Gamma Phi’s former Governor General of the Cebu Provincial Council and the current Premier of Triskelion de Visayas, said their organization is willing to help Megawide with its projects for Cebu.
C2W continues to help the Carbon community and the Grand Carbon Cleanup is one of the many projects the company is implementing in the area. It was made possible with assistance from the Cebu City Government, Market Operations Division, and Barangay Ermita officials.
